ALIWAL
SHOAL
Aliwal
Shoal is a 40-min. drive south of Durban. It comprises of
fossilized sand dunes and lies 5km offshore. The shoal has
sponges, hard & soft coral and a variety of game fish,
but what makes Aliwal such a unique dive destination, is the
presence of scores of Ragged tooth shark (Raggies). Between
the months of June and November, the Raggies come to the warmer
waters of the shoal to mate, and diving amongst these beautiful
creatures in their placid state is awe-inspiring. Not far
from Aliwal is the Produce, a Norwegian freighter that struck
Aliwal shoal in 1974, and rests in 30 metres of water.

ZANZIBAR
I
went to Zanzibar on a diving holiday in February – 2000,
and still nostalgically look at the photos whenever I can.-
Milko Conte, Outpost Safaris.
Arabia meets Africa on this once
slave trade centre. Very evident of this is the mixture of
people found on the island. Sultans from Oman made Zanzibar
there capital, and many old palaces in and around Stone town
give testament to this |
Diving
in the flat seas around Zanzibar is simply spectacular; the
viz. is an average of 25 metres and teeming with marine life
and coral. We dived around little islands situated 2 km offshore
from Stone Town and are still to this day the best I have
dived. On the northern tip of Zanzibar is Nungwi, recognized
as the best dive spot on the island, with numerous reefs off
a relatively uninhabited coastline. There are a few resorts
at Nungwi and nothing much else, so if getting away from it
all while still diving is what you want, then this is where
you must go. Let me assure you that nothing in this world
can prepare you for the beauty and spice of this African paradise. |
