FISH
RIVER CANYON
The
2nd largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in
North America, the Fish River Canyon winds its’ way
161km along the Fish River in Southern Namibia. The canyon
is 27km broad and 550m deep, with sheer, precipitous sides.
Game to be found is baboon, mountain zebra, leopard and large
monitor lizards amongst other arid land dwellers. In the southern
tip of the canyon are the Ais-Ais hotsprings, which are visited
for its’ relaxing qualities. The resort at the springs
is, however, closed from November-March, as the ultra-hot
temperatures make it unbearable to humans. |

ETOSHA
PAN
Known as the place of mirages, the Etosha Pan is home to 110
reptile, 100 mammal and 340 bird species. The first impression
of the park is of a vast expanse dazzling white pan, but in
the early morning and late afternoons, through tricks of refracted
light, the landscape glows and shimmers, changing from orange,
through pink and purple to an inky blue. Days in this part
of the world are extremely hot making night game drives extraordinary,
as the wildlife are at their more active. |

CENTRAL NAMIBIA
The skeleton coast running alongside the Namib Desert, is host
to a number of old ghost towns, remnants of the gold and diamond
rushes of yesteryear, as well as various shipwrecks marooned
offshore. Visiting this desolate area makes one realize how
futile it is to try and tame this land.
Swakopmund and Windhoek are modern cities with a definite German
influence in architecture, cuisine and culture, and are sparkling
oasis in the desert. |
To
explore the skeleton coast, Swakopmund would be a good base,
as their tourism infrastructure is quite solid.
The Namib Naukluft Park boasts the
highest sand dunes in the world – at Sossusvlei. Astronomy
enthusiasts will find Sosusvlei Mountain lodge a pleasure
with stargazing windows above each bed, to witness the clear
constellations in pollution free sky.
Also of interest is a visit to the German style breweries
in Windhoek to discover the art of creating a German beverage
masterpiece. |
